Can I change my oven from LPG to Natural Gas
Can I change my oven from LPG to Natural Gas
The short answer is yes, but the exact requirements for this vary between makes and models. For example, a Rational oven from the original SCC line (2004) can be converted (by a qualified engineer only) between gas types without the need for parts. Other brands, for example Electrolux, require conversion kits containing multiple parts and is a much longer process.
Always confirm the supplied gas type before taking delivery to ensure you are aware of what is required at the point of commissioning on site.
Disclaimer: Gas Conversions must always be carried out by a suitably qualified gas catering engineer working to the manufacturer's instructions. Failure to do this can lead to dangerous faults with the equipment and therefore must never be attempted by anyone other than a qualified engineer.
What power does my oven use?
What power does my oven use?
The power type will always be specified on the listing. If in doubt and you're looking for power requirements, always check the data plate. The data plate of the oven will contain the key electrical or gas requirements for the oven. If the data plate is missing, or appears to be incorrect (for example, changes have been made since factory), ask the supplier for the exact installation information.
Can I install my oven myself?
Can I install my oven myself?
The short answer is no. Whilst electric Combi Ovens may appear to be “plug and play”, especially smaller units which may be supplied with a plug, but as specialist pieces of commercial equipment, we would recommend Combi ovens are always installed by suitably qualified catering engineers working to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Failure to do this may lead to avoidable issues. 3 Phase ovens operate on higher voltages that also should only be handled by qualified electricians.
For gas equipment, it is required by law to have a combi oven installed and commissioned correctly. Installation is vital for the operational lifespan of the equipment, and all customers should budget to have this done properly. Whether you purchase new or used, a supplier can never be held accountable for issues that occur because of incorrect installation, and you may find your warranty isn’t valid for a specific issue or voided outright.
Do I need a water supply?
Do I need a water supply?
Yes, a Combi oven requires a steady cold-water supply to operate effectively. This is so it can generate the steam from either the boiler or a direct spray system. The connection on the wall needed is the same as a dishwasher, a ¾" inlet hose. Different ovens require either one or two feeds, so ensure that you know what is required so an oven can be installed.
It is also important the water feed operates at the correct water pressure. Generally, the average requirement is a minimum of 1 bar, and a maximum of 6 bar. Any higher risks damage to internal components so always check the water pressure before installing.
What drainage do I need?
What drainage do I need?
All Combi Ovens require their own waste drainage which should be accessible and directly behind within 1m of the machine’s location. Any pipework used should be steam temperature resistant (HT). The exact requirements for drainage will vary by model and site conditions.
Table models (ie XS, 6 Grid, 10 Grids) should be installed with a tundish on the wall to create an airgap between the oven and building waste. Floor models (20 & 40 grids) will require floor drainage due to the height of the fixed drainage outlet. Waste water from all combi ovens are not pumped and rely on gravity, so if you’re purchasing a floor model and do not have floor drainage, a pump waste system will be required.
Do you install the oven?
Do you install the oven?
CaterCombi provides an in-house installation services for rental customers only.
Sales customers purchasing an oven would need to find their own engineer to install and commission their machine. If you do not have an existing contact, we’ve worked with several engineers and companies across the country who may be able to help – however this is not guaranteed and is subject to availability and site location.

What Power Supply do I need?
What Power Supply do I need?
Before making a purchase, we need to know your power supply.
Combi Ovens will run on 3 Phase Electric, Single Phase Electric or Gas.
3 Phase Electric is required for any electric oven larger than a 6 grid. It can be identified by red commando sockets and plugs, or triple breakers on the consumer unit on a fuse board.
Single Phase Electric can usually be identified by blue commando sockets and plugs, or single breakers on the consumer unit on a fuse board.
6 grid Rational ovens can be supplied on single phase or 3 phase. Please ensure you’re aware of your available capacity on site before making a purchase to ensure it can be used without issue.
Gas is subject to more regulation, and you must ensure before making a purchase the oven can be installed on site. Combi Ovens will operate on LPG/Natural Gas. Gas ovens will also require a standard 13-amp socket to power the display and other required electronics within the machine.
Always check with your engineer or electrician that you have the capacity to run the oven you’re looking to purchase.
Do I need gas and electric?
Do I need gas and electric?
If you are buying a gas oven, then you will require a standard 13-amp electrical connection to power the display and other electric components within the machine. But the primary fuel source for daily operation, will be gas, like any other gas appliance.
What’s “better” gas or electric?
What’s “better” gas or electric?
There is no correct or easy answer as it depends entirely on your site and circumstances. You need to consider what you firstly have available on site. If you don’t have 3 Phase Electric in the building for example, then you’re limited to gas, and/or single phase.
Consider that Gas combi ovens are subject to specific legal regulations for both installation, commissioning and long-term servicing. So, if you have everything in place already for gas equipment and have discussed adding a combi oven to your cookline with your engineer, and they have confirmed you have the capacity for the equipment, then gas is probably for you.
If you have 3 Phase Electric and gas available, then you might want to consider that Electric ovens are not subject to the same legislation and don’t need to be installed or looked after by gas-safe engineers. For example, an electric oven technically doesn’t require canopy extraction (though recommended), but a gas oven legally requires a canopy with suitable gas interlocking.
An often-overlooked situation is that unattended overnight cleaning is not possible with gas combi ovens due to interlocks. A member of staff would always have to be on site to shut the gas down after the clean cycle.
With an electric oven, you and simply start the cleaning cycle and leave overnight unattended until the following morning.
Consider that gas ovens also contain more components/gas parts, therefore with more parts comes more possible parts to fail/require maintenance.
If you are starting completely from scratch, we would always recommend you arrange for a suitable engineer to do a site survey and make a fuel type recommendation based on your exact conditions. This will always remove the chance of ordering the wrong equipment.
I only have single phase – what is possible?
I only have single phase – what is possible?
Being limited to Single Phase Electric is not the end of the world, but it may mean you’d need to compromise on the oven capacity/number of trays available. 6 Grid Rational Combi Ovens can be supplied on Single Phase Electric.
So, let’s say for example you wanted a 10-grid unit, but didn’t have gas or 3 phase available, you could consider stacking 2 6 grid units on a single-phase supply (note-each would still require its own isolated power). This would also provide further benefits such as running steam and dry heat simultaneously across 2 units, additional capacity, and overall flexibility.
Is a vent essential?
Is a vent essential?
The short answer to the question is that you should have ventilation in place for combi ovens.
Ventilation is required/used in kitchens to draw out vapours and condensation from equipment use during cooking. Whether it is essential depends on the oven being ordered, and site conditions. If ventilation is already present, then you already would have a vent in place so this would likely be fine for most electric ovens.
If you are ordering a Gas Oven, then suitable ventilation with gas interlock is required by law. You should speak to an engineer about the installation requirements for gas combi ovens if you’re unsure as to what you do an don’t have.
Electric ovens do not require ventilation by law but is highly recommended for most kitchens due to the need to extract the steam/any condensation/general fumes from the kitchen.
Access
Access
Always ensure you measure any entry points into the intended location of the oven. Compare these measurements to the dimensions of the oven. We can provide a one page install guide which details the exact dimensions.Ensure the oven will both fit into the intended position as well as accessible. All brands come in different shapes and sizes, never assume a dimension is similar or the same. It could be a costly mistake to make.

Why would I buy a refurbished oven rather than new?
Why would I buy a refurbished oven rather than new?
Buying refurbished equipment comes with following benefits:
- A Combi Oven, used or new, is a big financial commitment for any business. Buying used comes with the obvious benefit of it being cheaper out of the gate. This is especially important for start-up businesses where cash flow is more likely to be tighter. Buying used will save thousands.
- You have a greater choice of product, used equipment means multiple brands are available so there is something for every budget. New equipment comes with a premium no matter the brand
- Buying a used combi oven is like buying a used car, if it is looked after there is no reason it can’t last a long time and generate years' worth of time saving, superior product quality, increased volume, and therefore a greater income.
- Even though the item is used, it has been fully serviced and tested by qualified technicians and is also provided with a parts warranty for full peace of mind. Cater Combi prides itself on being able to offer first class aftercare and we endeavour to look after all customers, even after a warranty has expired. This is reflected in our feedback on Google and Ebay.

The CaterCombi 57-point maintenance checklist is based on manufacturer’s planned preventative maintenance documentation, as well as a few of our own checks based on our own expertise across the brands we sell. The document ensures that we cover the same checks as other factory trained engineers would as part of yearly servicing, setting you up for the future. Any parts that are required are also replaced, if they are not operating within the set parameters or as expected. We use OEM original parts for all brands.
What is a CTU?
What is a CTU?
A CTU is a calcium treatment unit. In simple terms, it is a water softener that is suitable for Combi Ovens. A CTU is recommended for any ovens that don’t have any automatic descaling features. Scale is arguably the largest killer of combi ovens and therefore water should be suitably treated with a CTU. CTUs can also be regenerated.
